Sustainability at St Chad's

Our Mission

At Poulton St Chad’s, our commitment to the environment is rooted in the very beginning of God’s Big Story. In Genesis 2:15, we are told:

“The Lord God took the man and put him in the Garden of Eden to work it and take care of it.”

We believe that we are all called to be environmental stewards, entrusted by God to cherish and protect the world we live in. Appreciation of our natural world is a daily act of worship and respect for the beauty of creation.

Our Commitment to the Earth

We feel a deep responsibility to act with integrity and care. We strive to:

  • Foster a Connection to Nature: Through our use of green space and outdoor learning, we ensure every child develops a deep, personal bond with the natural world.

  • Model Environmental Stewardship: From the way we manage our resources to the small daily choices we make in our classrooms, we show our children that every action counts.

  • Empower Our Children: We recognize that the climate crisis can feel overwhelming. By providing our pupils with the knowledge, tools, and resilience they need, we turn climate anxiety into action, helping them become the courageous advocates our planet needs.

We are not just teaching our children about the world; we are teaching them how to love and protect it, ensuring that they and the generations to follow can continue to “work and take care” of the gardens they inhabit.

Meet Our Eco-Councillors

Matildah: I joined Eco-Council because I want to help the animals that live on our school grounds.

Lily: I joined Eco-Council because I wanted to help pick up rubbish and save the planet.

Jenson: I joined Eco-Council because I wanted to stop people from littering.

Finn: I joined Eco-Council because I wanted to cut down on electricity and help with the work on our school garden.

What have we already achieved?

Last year we established our Eco-Council and Staff Sustainability Team to support the children in building an appreciation and love of the natural world and build an understanding of ways we can help our planet during the climate crisis.
We loved taking part in the RSPB Big Bird Watch, with pupils eagerly spotting and recording the wonderful species that visit our grounds. Our enthusiasm for the natural world continued through BP’s Everyday Energy Competition, where children explored clever and creative ways to save energy in their daily lives.

A huge highlight has been the planting of 90 new trees on our school grounds. These young trees mark the beginning of our rewilding project on the field, an effort that will help create richer habitats for local wildlife for years to come. It has been wonderful to see the children’s excitement as they help nurture these new green spaces.

In Design Technology, our pupils have been showcasing impressive creativity and problem-solving skills. They have been busy designing sustainable homes built to withstand extreme weather events—an inspiring glimpse into the minds of future engineers, architects, and environmental thinkers.

We are also incredibly proud of the fantastic work done by our Eco-Councillors and our sustainability team. Their energy and ideas have helped build real engagement among the children, encouraging curiosity, responsibility, and a love for the environment.

Our commitment to sustainability serves as a powerful vehicle for Spirituality. It fosters spirtual growth  by allowing children to move beyond themselves and cultivate a sense of awe and wonder for “God’s creation.” Through regular reflection in our green spaces and active stewardship of the environment, pupils build a deeper, more mindful connection with the natural world. This sense of belonging to something greater than themselves encourages inner peace and a soulful appreciation for the beauty and fragility of life.
