Welcome To

Design & Technology

Here at St Chads we have a thriving, eclectic and vibrant Design Technology curriculum that is hugely popular with our pupils and their families. Part of our termly home learning menus focus on creative tasks that can be enjoyed at home and celebrated in school.

We are very proud of all our efforts in school and at home with Design Technology ranging from erupting volcanoes to fruit smoothies!

In our Early Years classes there are Creation Stations where children have daily access to junk modelling, inspiring communication, evaluation and adaptation of techniques and tools.

We love Design Technology!

DT Week

For our DT Week this year, all the children explored different structures and learnt more about amazing female engineers.

In Key Stage 1, the children designed and built houses inspired by the Three Little Pigs story. The children acted as engineers in order to help the three little pigs build a house that protects them from the wolf!
The children used various resources to build their houses then asked an adult to use a hair dryer or fan as the ‘puff’ to test their design.

In Key Stage 2, the children also considered sustainability issues from around the world as part of their learning.

In Year 3 and Year 4, the children were challenged to design and build a model of a structure that people can grow their crops on, even when their land becomes flooded.

In Year 5 and 6, the children completed the Beat the Flood Challenge. The aim of the challenge was for pupils to appreciate the design process of flood-resistant housing, and work together to build a model of a flood-proof house.

In Key Stage 1 the children looked into the life and work of Caroline Haslett. She was an electrical engineer (someone who works with electrical machines and equipment). She was also an expert on safety and electricity in the home and wanted more women to be scientists and engineers. Caroline believed electricity could change women’s lives for the better.

Year 3 and Year 4 looked into the work of Christina Koch. She has spent more time in space than any other woman! In October 2019 Christina Koch and Jessica Meir made the first all-female spacewalk. Also, during her flight, Koch has completed over 200 investigations in space.

In Year 5 and Year 6, the children learnt all about Aprille Ericsson-Jackson. Dr. Ericsson-Jackson made sure the satellites that orbit or move along a curved path around the earth, follow the correct trajectory or path. She has dedicated her career to breaking barriers and making space science more accessible to all.
