History
Welcome To
History
- At Poulton St Chad’s we are firm believers that History fires pupils’ curiosity to ask questions and know more about Britain’s past and that of the wider world.
- In History, we aim to provide high-quality, engaging and enjoyable lessons to enable the children to develop a coherent knowledge and understanding of the past so that they can understand the present and the future. Through our curriculum framework, it is our intent to help develop chronological understanding by linking current learning to previous learning and to make sense of the new knowledge that they acquire.
- We strive to develop a love for history by providing the children with the crucial skills of enquiry, critical analysis and the process of change to develop prospective and judgement.
- Therefore, we provide the children with a variety of sources to explore historically valid questions, hypotheses and make valid inferences.
- We aspire to nurture the children to develop a sense of their own identity and understand the challenges of their time.
- To ensure high standards of teaching and learning in History, we implement a curriculum that is progressive throughout the school. This curriculum gives full coverage of The 2014 National Curriculum programmes of study for History and in the Early Years Foundation Stage.
- At the start of each topic teachers take time to find out what our children already understand and want to find out. Our teachers use this to adapt and extend the curriculum to match children’s interests and needs, current events, the use of any support staff and the resources available. The children also note down what they have learnt throughout each topic as a way of showcasing the knowledge they have gained.
- We will attempt to immerse children in Historical vocabulary and dates through modelling of appropriate vocabulary from staff verbally, in books and in displays.
- Children will be stimulated, engaged and challenged through quality classroom-based teaching. To compliment this, we will also make purposeful use of outdoor education and extra-curricular activities, through use of the local area, visitors into school, themed days and school trips.
- Our History curriculum is designed so that children start by learning about their own personal history whilst introducing them to chronology, timelines and similarities and differences before exploring broader areas in KS2.
- We focus on a range of local area studies in order for the children to gain a sense of identify and understanding about the history of the area in which they live.
- Children are given opportunities, where possible, to study artefacts leading to enquiry, investigation, analysis, interpretation, evaluation and presentation.
- Cross-curricular links are planned for, with other subjects such as Maths, Writing and Computing

- Most children will achieve age related expectations in History at the end of their cohort year, as evidenced on the assessment grids.
- Children will retain knowledge that is pertinent to History and leave Poulton St Chad’s with an understanding of significant people and events that have happened whilst also understanding how things have changed over time.
- Children use their natural curiosity to develop a historical awareness of their local area through local history studies whilst also learning about the wider world.
- Children will enjoy History and be keen to talk about their learning. They will also be keen to showcase in their learning through displays around school.
- Staff will have the required support needed from the History leader and have regular discussions about resources, CPD and assessment to ensure they have the skills and resources needed to provide children with the best possible education.
Our curriculum follows National Curriculum requirements while matching our locality and school. Our pupils actively engage with history through the range of exciting opportunities that we offer. These include investigating a range of historical artefacts, visits to Historical sites and experts visiting our school. We believe that giving the opportunity to make history ‘real’ through artefacts and visits is key to them achieving their very best in this subject.
Recently, St Chad’s took part in a whole school History themed week. The focus of our week was King Athelstan, which linked with it being 1100 years since Athelstan ascended the throne. It was also a topical theme due to a recent archaeological dig finding a King Athelstan coin.
The week itself had a range of historical activities planned whilst there were also a range of cross curricular activities planned and taught throughout the week including scientific excavations, food technology tasks and artwork. Again we felt it was so important to give the children real life experiences.
At the end of the History Week, all the children in school gathered in the hall for a special showcase of the learning carried out throughout the week. This was a fantastic opportunity to see what the children had learnt about during the week and it was great to see each class present something slightly different. A special History award was presented to a child from each class who had really stood out throughout the different activities.
In addition to this, we ran a ‘design a coin’ competition which linked to the discovery of the coin of King Athelstan. This was judged by senior leaders and a KS1 and KS2 winner was chosen and prizes handed out.
