Supporting Mental Health and Well-Being at Poulton St Chad’s C of E Primary School
At Poulton St Chad’s, we are fully committed to nurturing the emotional health and well-being of our pupils and staff. We understand that life brings challenges, and there may be times when anyone—child or adult—needs a little extra support.
We believe that positive mental health is everyone’s responsibility. By working together as a school community, we can create an environment where well-being is prioritised and supported every day.
Our Mental Health and Well-Being Lead, Miss Siddall, plays a key role in promoting mental wellness across the school, offering guidance and support to all our pupils.
How We Promote a Mentally Healthy School:
• Living our values – We promote our core school values to help every child feel a strong sense of belonging.
• Pupil voice – We actively encourage pupils to share their ideas and be involved in school decisions.
• Celebrating success – We recognise and celebrate all achievements—both academic and personal—to help build self-esteem.
• Encouraging responsibility – Pupils are given opportunities to take responsibility for themselves and support others, helping them develop a strong sense of self-worth.
• Time for reflection – We provide quiet moments for children to reflect and process their thoughts and feelings.
• Access to support – We ensure that children have access to the right support, at the right time.
• Emotional understanding – We help pupils make sense of their feelings and encourage them to talk openly about worries or concerns.
• Building resilience – We support children in developing emotional resilience so they can navigate challenges and setbacks with confidence.
Teaching and Learning
We follow the Kapow scheme of work to teach our children about mental health and wellbeing. This scheme is underpinned by the 5 ways to well being. Please see below the links to the long term plan and the progression of skills and knowledge.
Together, we aim to create a caring, supportive atmosphere where every child feels safe, valued, and ready to learn.
If you need to contact the School Nurse for help or advise about any medical issue regarding your child, please call: 0300 2470047 – Select Option 2
SMSC in Mental Health and Well Being Teaching.
Through our teaching and learning of children’s mental health and wellbeing we are supporting children’s spirituality by:
- Providing opportunities for children to name, identify and reflect on their feelings and the impact this might have on others.
- Teach children an understanding of their own feelings and feelings of others.
- Provide opportunities for children to appreciate the world around them and how this can be a way of regulating emotions and behaviour.
- Allow children to understand how best that can support their own mental health and wellbeing.
